Life Chair by Formway

The Life Chair by New Zealand design studio Formway is one of the standout ergonomic task chairs of modern office design. Developed with Knoll, Life became Formway’s international breakthrough.

Among those who chose it was Apple founder Steve Jobs. Life became his office chair of choice — particularly fitting for someone so closely associated with products where complex thinking was distilled into a simple, intuitive experience.

The instructions are a perfect example. A discreet pull-out guide beneath the seat explains each adjustment exactly where you need it, then slides back out of sight when you’re done. It may be a small detail, but the attention paid to it captures what makes Life so impressive.

That thinking carries through to the way Life works. Its synchronized recline automatically uses body weight as a counterbalance, while the flexible suspension back and seat respond as the sitter changes position. Seat depth, height, lumbar support and recline can still be adjusted, but much of the chair simply responds to the person using it.
